SJ HATCHERY EDUCATION

The University of Alaska Southeast held a week-long Fisheries Technology 293 laboratory in Sitka based at the Sitka Sound Science Center. Some dozen students, including Hawaiian cultural exchange students who attended Sitka Whalefest, participatied. UAS Ketchikan and Sitka Campuses collaborated with NSRAA and SSSC to present the hands-on laboratory experiences. On Monday at the Sage Building students saw a food preparation demonstration by Sid Carl relating to the historical significance of salmon in the lives of Southeast Alaska residents. Tuesday students took Coho eggs at the SSSC SJ Hatchery and do water quality measurements with Dan Goodness. Wednesday they visited the NSRAA Medvejie Hatchery. Thursday students visited Silver Bay Seafoods and the NSRAA Sawmill Cove Coho Hatchery then explored otolith and wire tag marking at the SSSC SJ Hatchery. Friday Students ompleted the week with classroom work at SSSC on basic fish pathology.
